Imphal, June 04 2025:
MLA L Susindro has announced that the houses destroyed by the current spate of flood in Khurai Assembly segment will be constructed anew.
The MLA today distributed edible items and other relief materials to flood affected people including those taking shelter in relief camps.
Susindro said that Khurai is one of the Assembly segments worst affected by the current flood.
The Government will consider how the damaged and destroyed houses can be constructed anew.
"Even if the Government cannot come up with any plan or scheme to reconstruct the damaged houses, I will re-build each and every damaged house out of my own pocket", Susindro declared.
Out of the total 43 polling stations of Khurai AC, 39 have been affected by floods, he said.
He also announced that he would repair and restore Imphal-Pangei road which currently remains cut off due to floods at Khurai Heikrumakhong and Khurai Konsam Leikai (near Ipum Pat) even if it is not repaired by the Government.
Pointing out that three major rivers viz; Imphal, Iril and Kongba flow through Khurai AC, Susindro claimed that he was working to strengthen river embankments and construct retaining walls even before he was elected as an MLA.
"After I got elected, river embankments were strengthened out of the MLA Local Area Development Fund, not from any Government fund or scheme", he said.
Saying that they are finding it hard to collect earth for filling the breached river embankments, the MLA asserted that the difficulties encountered in restoring breached or damaged river banks can be addressed to a large extent if the Forest Department identifies a site for collecting earth.
He also appealed to all concerned people to stop encroaching upon rivers like opening shops, hotels etc on the river embankments and urged all concerned to explore alternative means of livelihood instead of encroaching upon rivers.
The MLA asserted that one major factor for the frequent and devastating floods witnessed in the State is the wanton deforestation activities in the hill areas.
He also underscored the need to formulate a long term policy to avert floods and mitigate the impacts of floods.
He further appealed to all concerned not to politicise floods and the people's suffering.
