MSCW commits to women's welfare, empowerment

Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) organised a one-day awareness programme on "Rights of a Woman and POCSO Act, 2012" at Malom Tuliyaima, on Tuesday with the participation of members of various Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across Imphal West district.
In her address, MSCW chairperson Thumlip Tin-ingpham Monsang urged women to stay informed about their legal rights.
She stated that empowered and aware women are essential for fostering resilient households and contributing to a just and healthier society.
Highlighting the significance of the POCSO Act, she underscored the need for greater public awareness to effectively prevent crimes against children and to promote a safer, more inclusive-social environment.

She reiterated that MSCW remains steadfast in advancing the welfare and empowerment of women across the state.
Encouraging women to approach the Commission for support in matters affecting their rights and wellbeing, she assured that MSCW is fully committed to assisting in resolving issues and promoting family stability for a better society.
Speaking at the event, MSCW member secretary W Phajatombi Devi underscored the critical need for women to be fully aware of their rightful entitlements for an equitable and empowered society, stressing that no woman should remain oppressed, subjugated, or ignorant of her rights.
"Women hold significant positions at various levels, from local bodies and gram panchayats to state, national, and even international levels," she said.
She highlighted MSCW's continuous efforts to ensure women play their rightful roles in shaping and uplifting society.
Phajatombi added that the Commission has been at the forefront of addressing women's grievances, ranging from cases of sexual harassment and abuse to domestic violence and other forms of injustice.
Emphasising the importance of solidarity among women, she urged collective efforts toward achieving full empowerment.
She also highlighted the array of legal rights afforded to women, placing particular emphasis on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and encouraged increased awareness and vigilance regarding its provisions.
Addressing the gathering, MSCW member Lourembam Dayabati Devi noted that many women are of ten unaware of their entitled rights and become victims of various issues.
She said the programme aims to educate and empower women by raising awareness of their legal rights, including the POCSO Act, and by informing them about the proper channels to seek assistance in case of any violations.
Speaking on the sidelines, Rinabai Salam who is state mission manager (Human Resource), highlighted that Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission's primary objective is to empower women by providing sustainable livelihoods and alleviating poverty through focused social, economic, and financial development.

Additionally, she stressed the need for women to be well-informed about their rights, including the POSH Act, to help curb violence against women and to nurture future women leaders.
During the programme's technical session, advocates Thiyam Rajkishore Singh provided insights on "POCSO Act, 2012" and Soubam Nongpoknganba Meitei on "Rights of a Woman" .
The programme was also attended by MSCW members Chuongsin Koireng and SK Sophia Moyon, Imphal West district mission manager Prabeena Nongmaithem, and SHGs of Imphal West district.
