Imphal, July 14 2025:
Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) on Monday urged government school teachers who are running or engaged in private institutions, coaching and tuition centres to immediately stop such practices, warning that the federation will publicly disclose their names and names of the institutions involved if the practice continues.
Addressing the media at its Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai office, MSF president Hijam Romesh said involvement of government teachers in private education businesses is a major factor for degeneration of government schools in the state.

"While education is a crucial tool for the progress of society, the current education system in Manipur continues to reflect the colonial framework introduced under the British rule", he rued, contending that the system, designed to serve specific class interests, has since been carried forward by wealthy individuals with a profit-driven approach.
According to Romesh, the mushrooming of private institutions across the state is closely linked to the decline of government educational institutions.
One of the reasons is the direct or indirect involvement of government teachers in operating or working for these private institutions, which he said has undermined the quality and credibility of government schools.
Recounting an order issued by the department of education (Schools) on October 10, 2022, Romesh reminded that government employees are prohibited from engaging in any business activity without prior approval from the government.
He questioned whether the government would continue to ignore such clear violations, which go against the Right to Education (RTE) Act and the Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964.He further criticised government inaction over privately run educational institutions flouting prescribed rules and regulations, and accused the authorities of allowing individuals to turn education into a commercial venture.
The president also charged the government of failure to take concrete measures to revive government schools and turning a blind eye to government teachers engaged in unauthorised private ventures.
In such a situation, there is no room for bringing quality education, Romesh added.
He demanded the government to launch a crackdown on such illegal practices at the earliest and reiterated that the federation will disclose names of those teachers along with the names of the institutions involved if they fail to stop engaging in private institutions at the earliest.
