25 years RI for rape convict

Special Judge POCSO, Ukhrul on Monday sentenced a man, convicted in rape cases of two minor girls, to rigorous imprisonment for 25 years.
The court declared the accused K Ramyo Shimray (61) of Lunghar village Ukhrul as guilty under Section 5(1)(m) read with Section 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012 in a hearing conducted on April 24 and listed the ease for sentence hearing on Monday.
During Monday's hearing, the defence counsel submitted that the convicted person belonging to an impoverished family and with poor health conditions, committed the crime under the influence of liquor.
Stating that the accused had spent six years in judicial custody during the trial, the counsel prayed for reducing the sentence period.
On the other hand, the special PP called the crime committed of grievous nature and prayed for life imprisonment.
After hearing both sides, the court sentenced the convict to 25 years in rigorous imprisonment along with Rs 2000 fme, which in case of non-compliance will entail simple imprisonment for another three months.
The duration he Spent in judicial custody during the trial will be commuted from the total sentence period.
The court also observed that it will discuss the matter of compensation to the two victims after they file formal application under the Manipur Victim Compensation Scheme, 2019 .
