Imphal, March 28 2025:
RIMS Department of Urology professor (retired) Dr Sinam Rajendra, successfully resolved a rare case of torsion testis, a surgical emergency that requires intervention within six hours to prevent permanent damage.
The professor manually untwisted the testis, avoiding the need for surgery in a teenage boy who was also a cancer patient.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club on Friday, Dr Rajendra stated that this rare accomplishment was a remarkable case in his 50-year career.
He explained that torsion testis occurs when the testis, which produces sperm, gets twisted and restricts blood flow.
This condition typically requires immediate surgical intervention to keep the testis alive.

The teenage patient came on Thursday morning, complaining of extreme pain which emergency testing confirmed as torsion testis, said Dr Rajendra, adding that he manually untwisted the testis, relieving the pain.
A subsequent test confirmed that blood flow resumed to normal, resolving the condition without the need for surgery.
Dr Rajendra elaborated that torsion testis can occur due to lifting heavy objects, passing hardened stools, or due to a congenital defect.
Since the teenage boy was also battling cancer, he had consulted the doctor concerned regarding the possible complications of surgery.
Dr Rajendra emphasised the importance of cooperation and coordination among doctors to provide better care for patients.
He also urged the public to have confidence in the capabilities of local doctors and hospitals, while advocating for a shift away from the growing trend of seeking treatment in other states.
Joining the media briefing, Ultra Care Sono Scan director and ultrasonologist Dr Amar highlighted that patients complaining of severe pain in the scrotum should undergo immediate testing to differentiate between infection and torsion testis.
While infections can often be treated with medication, torsion testis necessitates surgery within six hours.
Dr Amar remarked that all torsion testis cases he had encountered previously required surgical intervention.
Although he had read about manual untwisting of the spermatic cord, he had never witnessed any doctor perform it until Dr Rajendra's remarkable feat.
Meanwhile, mother of the teenage boy expressed gratitude to Dr Rajendra for resolving her son's condition without surgery .
