Kakching, April 26 2025:
In a letter to MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, the Working Committee on Rejuvenation of Irum Turel has appealed for extension of necessary help to rejuvenate, restructure and restore the Irum River.
Highlighting the importance of the sacred water stream, the letter signed by Committee president Ksh Chhatradhari Singh and secretary M Maniyaima Singh asserted that Irum River has been associated with the much worshipped Ibudhou Irum Ningthou to whom 11 Umang Laikons are dedicated at Kakching, Irengband, Laimanai, Kakching Khunou, Wangoo etc and the ritualistic Lai Ikouba is performed every year on the river-bed of the river.
The Committee further stressed that the river is also mentioned in the Cheitharol Kumbaba and in Lammitlon, the Manipur Toponymy written by Pandit M Gourachandra.
Additionally, the Irengband Water Supply Scheme is wholly dependent on Irum River while on the other hand the river is encroached and shrinking.
Stating that the Committee conducted social service drives in December 2024 and January 2025, it added that the Committee is now compelled to use KOBELCO excavator with a long boom to carry out cleaning of the river but is unable to do so due to financial constraints.
As a result, the Working Committee on Rejuvenation of Irum Turel has appealed to the MP to extend necessary help in the larger interests of the people.
