Imphal, April 23 2025:
A 45-day adult literacy campaign, organised by the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University, was launched on Wednesday at Ragailong by MU vice chancellor professor Naorem Lokendra.
Speaking as the chief guest of the inaugural event, professor Lokendra highlighted the distinctive role of the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension among the 45 departments at MU.
He noted that unlike conventional academic departments, it directly contributes to societal development by identifying illiterate individuals and acquainting them with essential literacy skills during each academic session.
Commenting on the evolving educational landscape, the VC pointed out the significant difference between the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and previous education systems.
He said the NEP 2020 aims to reintegrate individuals who, despite holding educational qualifications, remain unproductive in society, adding that the new system encourages self-employment and helps create opportunities for others as well.
Professor Lokendra also urged the university to expand initiatives undertaken by the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension to ensure its students become valuable assets to society.
Adult Education Department head Dr Lamalu Thaimei informed that second-semester students are required to engage in community outreach as part of their curriculum.
"Each year, they visit various locations to educate illiterate Individuals, and the current campaign at Ragailong is part of that ongoing effort," Lamalu explained, while thanking the locals for their cooperation and support to the campaign.
The function was also attended by Ragailong Youth Club general secretary Gaithaolung Maringmei, Adult Education Department associate professor Arambam Jolly, assistant professors Chanam Sonia, Thingbaijam Sharmila and Peichui Vashum.
