Senapati to enforce ban on plastic items

Senapati district's deputy commissioner has notified the denizens that plastic carry bags and plastic bottles under 1 litre will be prohibited in accordance with the Manipur Plastic Policy of 2022, adding that this directive will be strictly enforced within the district's jurisdiction from now on.
The district commissioner instructed all residents of the district to strictly follow the guidelines outlined in the Manipur Plastic Policy of 2022, emphasising a specific ban on the import of plastic carry bags from Myanmar.
Security personnel stationed at checkpoints are tasked with seizing any banned products.
The DC cautioned that defaulters shall attract penalties under relevant provisions of the Manipur Plastic Policy, 2022.Additionally, in accordance with the Plastic Waste Management Rules of 2016 and empowered by Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the following regulations are now in effect: plastic carry bags, whether made from virgin or recycled plastic, must be at least 50 microns thick; manufacture and use of non-recyclable plastic will be phased out within two years; manufacturers of plastic carry bags and multi-layered packaging must ensure proper marking or labelling of their products; single-use and disposable plastics are prohibited, with an emphasis on promoting compostable alternatives; PET or PETE bottles with less than 1 litre capacity for holding drinking water are not permitted for use, sale, storage, or manufacturing; carry bags made from either virgin or recycled plastic must have a minimum thickness of 75 microns; non-woven plastic carry bags must have a minimum weight of 60 grams per square metre (GSM); manufacturing, importing, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of the following single-use plastic (SUP), polystyrene, and expanded polystyrene items are prohibited: ear buds with plastic stems, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) used for decorations, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery (such as forks, spoons, knives, and straws), trays, wrapping or packing films for sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, as well as plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns thick, and stirrers.
