While informing that 30 organ donors including two persons with brain-dead condition have saved lives of several people at the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) so far, JNIMS director professor L Deben has appealed people to encourage organ donors.
Addressing a press conference at his office chamber on Thursday, professor L Deben said that 28 living donors have saved lives of 28 people by donating their kidneys at JNIMS hospital.
Apart from this, two braindead donors also saved lives of two patients by donating their kidneys and both the patients are still living, he said, adding that JNIMS hospital is now able to perform kidney transplant successfully with significant development made in the medical sector of the state under the keen initiative of chief minister N Biren Singh.
One of the two brain-dead donors was Sarungbam Kenedy of Singjamei Chingamakha and he created history by becoming the first organ donor in Manipur to donate both his kidneys on August 2, 2023.Kenedy donated one of his kidneys to JNIMS hospital and the other to Shija hospitals.
Kenedy and another brain-dead donor named K Robenkumar of Kongpal Kshetri Leikai saved lives of four kidney failed patients by donating their kidneys.
Robenkumar donated one each kidney to JNIMS and Shija hospital on Wednesday, professor L Deben said.
According to professor L Deben, organs of a dead person can be removed and transplanted within 6-8 hours to save lives of other patients.
The period between 6-8 hours after dead is known as brain-dead in medical term and vital organs of human body remain alive during this period.
Accordingly, people should encourage and become organ donors to save lives of other people.
Apart from organs, people can also donate their bodies after death instead of cremating so that the lifeless body could be utilised for medical students, he said and appealed to people to donate their bodies after death.
Professor L Deben further said that four inmates of Old Age Home of Meitei Langol, one person from Bishnupur and another from Thoubal have donated their bodies at JNIMS hospital so far.
It is due to the help of the government, doctors and staff of the medical institute and the people that JNIMS hospital has been able to reach this stage, he said and urged people of the state to continue extending help so that the institute could be on par with the best medical institutions of the country.
JNIMS medical superintendent Dr Kh Lokeshwar also informed media persons that JNIMS hospital has been taking extra caution in view of increasing Dengue cases in the state.
From the beginning of July till date, a total of 178 Dengue patients including 10 minors have been admitted to JNIMS hospital with 11 of them still undergoing treatment.
However, many more suffering from Dengue are undergoing treatment at the emergency and OPD wards of the hospital.
Symptoms of Dengue are different and there is no specific treatment or medicine for the disease as of now.
So, prevention is the only way for treatment of the disease, he cautioned.
While appealing to people not to panic as Dengue is not an alarming disease, Dr Kh Lokeshwar said that the state government is working at its best level to contain outbreak of Dengue and people could also prevent the disease by preventing mosquito bite and removing mosquito prone water-logged areas.
