FIR must for compensation in 'hit and run' cases: DC

Imphal West deputy commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar said that he has started signing orders for 'hit and run' cases victims of Imphal West district to get compensation from National Insurance Corporation.
According to Rajkumar, victims of 'hit and run' cases are entitled to get compensation from the National Insurance Corporation irrespective of whether the victims or their families claim for compensation or not.
As such, signing of orders for payment of compensation to 'hit and run' victims/families in respect of Imphal West district have begun from Monday, the DC said.
Rajkumar, who is also in-charge of DC Imphal East, attended the inaugural session of the awareness programme on 'Child marriage and POCSO Act, 2012' organised by Imphal East district administration and Child Protection Unit, Imphal East at Panchayat Bhavan, Porompat on Wednesday.
As chief guest of the function, Rajkumar said people of Manipur are either reluctant or fear of filing FIR at police station when road accident or unwanted incident happen.
However, people should not be apprehensive about filing FIR as it is a mere report for collecting first information of the incident, he said, explaining that entitled opportunities will be lost if FIR procedure is not complied with.
Giving example of the benefits of filing FIR, Rajkumar said there are many cases of 'hit and run' and the victims' families could get compensation irrespective of whether claim is made or not.
When looked into police record, at least 20 unresolved 'hit and run' cases in Imphal West district alone were found and DC Imphal West staff were despatched to investigate and collect documents to provide compensation to families of the victims of 'hit and run' cases.
Accordingly, orders for availing compensation to victims' families amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh were signed on Tuesday alone and more such orders will be signed.
The orders signed Tuesday were final and victims/families will get entitled compensation amount from the National Insurance Corporation, he said.
