Water scarcity affects Kakching denizens

Kakching, April 03 2025: With drying up of the Shengmai/Sekmai river, people of Kakching town and adjoining pockets are facing scarcity of water with the problem likely to aggravate further in view of Kakching and Keirak water supply schemes ceasing operation due to low water level of the river.

In view of the situation, a joint team of Kakching Ithei Committee, Kakching Water Supply and Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organisation (JNGVO) assessed condition of the Kakching ItheiMaru Pickup Weir at Meipou and made arrangement for partial diversion of water released by the Weir to Ithei Khong towards Shengmai river.

Speaking to media persons, Ithei Committee president Yengkhom Achouba pointed out that due to prolonged dry spell the water level of Shengmai river has declined consequently affecting people of Kakching and surrounding areas, who depend on the river water for various purposes.

Kakching and Keirak water supply schemes are also on the verge of halting operation as the Shengmai river serves as primary source water for both, he maintained, adding that they have arranged for releasing water from the Ithei Maru Pickup Weir to Shengmai river and Ithei Khong to at-least address woes of the farmers, he informed.

Y Achouba also appealed to the people not to indulge in sand mining, fishing activities, etc., that could further complicate the situation, and urged authority concerned to look into the matter.

On the other hand, JNGVO members noted that main reason of drying up of the Shengmai river is construction of the Sekmai Barrage at Keirak.

As such, the organisation appealed for early completion of the Barrage construction to ensure release of adequate quantity of water.
