Ex-MP Behring laid to rest with full honours

The mortal remains of Bd Behring, former Chandel MLA and former Rajya Sabha MP, were laid to rest with full honours at his Chakpikarong residence in Chandel district on Monday.
Tributes and condolences poured in as the final rites were solemnly performed.
Behring passed away on June 27 at Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.
Following his demise, his body was brought to his residence at Minuthong, Imphal, from where it was taken to his birthplace, Chakpikarong, where memorial services and final rites were conducted.
Condolence services were held in various parts of Chandel district, with people paying their last respects to the departed leader.
A joint condolence event was organised by Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) and Anal Naga Tangpi (ANTA/Anal Naga Union) at Japhou Bazar where floral tributes were offered to the mortal remains as a mark of respect.
Similar condolence gatherings took place at Khambathel village in the Western Valley area, Lamrinkhuw village along the Pallel-Chandel Road, Komlathabi, and Liwa Sarei joined by large number of people.
The main condolence ceremony was held at the Chakpikarong Public Ground, Behring's native place.
Leaders from various Naga community organisations delivered heartfelt condolence messages.
His mortal remains were finally laid to rest following a mass public prayer.
Bd Behring was born on February 18, 1951 at Thorcham village, in Chakpikarong sub-division of Chandel district.
He earned a Master's degree in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
Throughout his life, he remained actively involved in various organisations dedicated to the welfare and uplift of the people.
He entered politics in 1990 and was elected as the MLA from Chandel (ST) assembly constituency as a Janata Dal candidate during the 5th Manipur Legislative Assembly election.
In the same year, he was nominated as a Rajya Sabha MP and then re-elected as an MLA from the same constituency in the 2002 Manipur Assembly election, this time representing the BJP.
During his political career, he also served as the minister (Independent Charge) of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS).
Before foraying into electoral politics, Behring was known for his dedication to the people and the Naga community through his political and social service.
In 2005, he was honoured with the "Best Citizen of India" award.
Behring also served as the general secretary of Anal Naga Students' Union, president of Tengnoupal District Students' Federation, general secretary of All Tribal Student's Union, Manipur, counsellor of JNU Students' Council; founder and president of JNU Tribal Students' Union, Hill Peoples' Forum, Manipur, and founder member of United Naga Council.
