Even though the appointment of three regular college principals through the Manipur Public Service Commission on Nov 14 last by the state government is a good step towards educational development, there have been instances of favoritism, nepotism, manipulation and corruption in those appointments.
This is alleged by the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) in a press statement issued on Nov 26 .
The DESAM stated that it endorsed the demands of the All Manipur College Teachers' Association (AMCTA) to cancel the appointment orders and remove the incumbent commissioner of Higher Education from the post for allegedly involving in corrupt practices in the appointment of the principals.
The student body, while demanding appointment of regular principals of colleges in a fair manner, appealed to the chief minister and education minister of Manipur to take action in this regard.
It also alleged that the three teachers who have been appointed as regular principals of colleges do not possess the requisite qualification as mentioned in the advertisement issued by the MPSC under the UGC regulations.
They are not qualified to be candidates for the posts, DESAM statement added.
The API Score Assessment done by the Special Screening Committee of Higher Education on February 5 last should have been done for qualified candidates, it asserted while saying that the process of assessment was not doe as per guidelines of UGC.
While demanding punishment of errant officials and revocation of appointment orders for the college principals, DESAM also appealed to the AMCTA to resort to protests which do not harm the academic atmosphere of the students.
