Assam Rifles hosts cancer awareness programme on World Cancer Day at Pallel Garrison

Assam Rifles organised a cancer awareness programme at the Sangai Auditorium, Pallel Garrison, Kakching District on Wednesday to mark World Cancer Day.
As per a release issued by the IGAR (South), the initiative was aimed at educating and sensitising families of personnel and the local civilian population, including women from all communities, on cancer prevention, early detection and timely treatment.
The programme was aligned with the World Cancer Day theme, "United by Unique", highlighting a people-centred approach to cancer care that values individual experiences while uniting communities in the shared goal of reducing the cancer burden.
Prof Dr Thaodem Tomcha Singh, Senior Radiation Oncologist at the American Oncology Institute, Imphal, with over four decades of distinguished service in oncology, shared insights on cancer risk factors, preventive strategies, the importance of early screening and advances in modem treatment modalities.
A pioneer of postgraduate radiotherapy training in North East India and former Head of the Department of Radiotherapy and Regional Cancer Centre, RIMS, Prof Singh has contributed extensively to research, medical education and cancer care in the region.
Adding a deeply human dimension, Arpita Chowdhury, wife of a senior official of Assam Rifles and a cancer survivor, shared her personal journey of resilience and recovery, inspiring participants with her experience.
Informative pamphlets on cancer awareness, early warning signs, preventive measures and available screening facilities were distributed.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 80 attendees, including officials, troops, families and civilians including 45 women from all communities, reflecting strong community engagement.
