A red alert has been issued for the entire Northeast region including Manipur on Friday, while an orange alert will be in place on Saturday.
According to IMD, parts of Manipur, including Ukhrul, Chandel, Bishnupur, and Thoubal districts, face a heightened risk of flash floods till 11:30 am of May 30 due to intense rainfall activity.
Widespread moderate rainfall is expected to continue over the state throughout the week, with the heaviest spells anticipated on Friday and Saturday.
Manipur is also likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall in some areas on Friday along with other north-eastern states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
On June 1, the state will continue to receive heavy rain, although no alert for the entire northeast except for Assam and surrounding areas for which IMD issued an orange alert.
From June 2, the intensity is expected to reduce, and no significant weather event is forecast for Manipur on June 3 and 4.IMD warned that the expected heavy to extremely heavy rain could lead to falling tree branches, uprooting of small trees like banana and papaya, damage to plantations, horticulture, and standing crops.
Kut-cha houses and poorly built structures may suffer minor damage, while landslides, water logging, and road disruptions are likely in vulnerable areas.
Helicopter services and road traffic may also be impacted due to reduced visibility and strong squally winds.
Residents have been advised to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and move to safer locations if conditions worsen.
IMD has urged people to avoid sheltering under trees during lightning and to unplug electrical appliances when thunder-storms are expected.
