Imphal, April 25 2025:
The 24-hour general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Custodial Death of village volunteer Khoisnam Sanajaoba disrupted normal life across the state on Friday.
Shops in Khwairamband Ima Keithel, Paona Keithel and Thangal Keithel remained closed.
Aside from movement of emergency services, the roads wore a deserted look.
While private institutions ceased service/operation for the day, government offices remained open.
Locals of Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai, which is the birthplace of Sanajaoba, along with Tinsid Road and Khurai Lamlong Bazar, barricaded the roads and also set inflammable materials on fire.
However, there were no reports of any arrests.
In this regard, JAC convenor L Kumari demanded strict action against the police personnel involved in Sanajaoba's custodial death.
The convener continued that that the strike was carried out after the demand for publicising the post mortem report was not put into action.
Kumari then said that more intense protests would continue if their demands are not met.
The general strike also affected Bishnupur district as the markets of Nambol, Oinam, Bishnupur, Ningthoubung, Moirang and Kumbi downed shutters for the day.
In Kakching, the markets remained closed and sported a deserted look, while no passenger service vehicles except for private vehicles plied on the roads.
