Awareness first step to women empowerment: Thumlip

A one-day sensitisation programme on "Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013" was held on Thursday at the conference hall of College of Food Technology, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Lamphelpat.
The event was jointly organised by Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) and College of Food Technology.
Speaking at the programme, MSCW chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang highlighted the significant role women play in society, both as visible leaders and as vital contributors behind the scenes.
She emphasised the importance of awareness, stating: "As women, we must know our rights.
Awareness is the first step towards empowerment.
It is crucial that we understand the laws that safeguard our dignity, safety, and equality".
She further urged all institutions and workplaces to establish an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) in accordance with the Act.
"If we face any problem, we should report to the ICC.
Every workplace and institution must have an ICC.
It is essential for creating a safe and supportive environment," she said, appealing to the public to promote and implement these mechanisms.
She also encouraged women to come forward, assert their rights, and help raise awareness within their communities.
During the technical session, advocate Thiyam Rajkishore deliberated on the topic "Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013".Among others, the programme was also attended by MSCW member secretary W Phajatombi Devi, MSCW members Lourembam Dayabati Devi, SK Sophia Moyon, and T Chongsin Koireng, and professor Ng Joykumar Singh of College of Food Technology.
Students and staff of College of Food Technology actively participated in the programme, during which an interactive session between the resource person and participants was also facilitated.
