KVK, Ccpur celebrates National Fish Farmers' Day

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is committed in making Manipur self-reliant in fish production, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre head Dr Ch Basudha has stated, expressing firm belief that the venture would be a huge success.
According to a press release by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Churachandpur, Dr Basudha declared the ICAR's objective during the celebration of National Fish Farmers' Day organised by the KVK under the aegis of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Manipur Centre at Tokpa Kabui village, Churachandpur district on Thursday.

The celebration was attended by KVK, Churachandpur CTO (Soil Science) Dr L Somendro Singh and Tokpa village chief Gaipuibi Kamei attended as guests of honour, with ICAR-KVK, Chandel's Dr A Ameeta Devi, Ukhrul's Dr S Khogen Singh, Tamenglong's Dr H Lembisana Devi and SMS (Fisheries) N Sureshchandra Singh as resource persons.
Presiding over the function, Dr Basudha Devi highlighted ICAR's commitment to promoting science-led growth in fisheries, while mentioning that the state has been relying on import of fishes to meet its demands, which is causing massive drain of revenue and economy.
"Manipur's wetlands, ponds, and paddy fields are rich resources waiting for scientific intervention.
Through our collaborative efforts, we can make the state self-reliant in fish production," she affirmed.
In his speech, KVK, Churachandpur coordinator & CTO (Fisheries) Dr N Soranganba emphasised the significance of this day as a tribute to Indian fisheries pioneers Dr Hiralal Chaudhuri and Dr KH Alikunhi for their successful demonstration of induced breeding (hypophysation) of carp in 1957 and further paved the way of fisheries growth in India.
KVK Churachandpur senior scientist-cum-head Dr Manoj Kumar Pandey stressed the need for integrated farming approaches.
In all, 105 fish farmers from across 12 villages attended the celebration, in which selected beneficiaries were provided with fish fingerlings and fish feed under the Frontline Demonstration (FLD) and On-farm Trial (OFT) programme.
The day ended with a discussion-cum-interaction session between scientists and fish farmers, focusing on localised challenges, best practices, and modern innovations in aquaculture.
Farmers actively participated, sharing their experiences and expressing their aspirations for better training, seed quality, and market access.
The event concluded with Vote of Thanks by CTO (Home Science) Dr S Roma Devi.
As a symbolic gesture of ecological responsibility and community involvement, a tree plantation ceremony was conducted by all dignitaries, reinforcing the theme of sustainable development.
