CoHSEM, BSEM merger on cards

Efforts are on to merge the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CoHSEM) and the Board of Secondary Education (BSEM) into a single entity with a new name, disclosed CoHSEM secretary Khundrakpam Asnikumar.
He revealed the government endeavour at the silver jubilee celebration-cum awards distribution to meritorious students and teachers of Trinity Public School at Mongsangei campus on Wednesday.
Asnikumar informed that a government-level committee would be constituted soon to begin process for merger of BSEM and CoHSEM, as per the instruction of the Ministry of Education.
However, the modalities on whether it would be autonomous or fully converted into a government office is still unclear, he conveyed.
Informing that there would be changes in the Class XI examination, he observed that students and teachers take the examination lightly, regarding it as a mere promotion examination.
The questions are common for all schools and the tabulations are submitted to the Council for approval, following which the results are declared.
However, in the recent Class XI examination, some schools submitted tabulations which were barely satisfactory.
As such, a meeting of the examination committee was convened attended by college teachers and principals of higher secondary schools.
The Class XI examination would be conducted by the teachers of the respective schools and the answer scripts submitted to the Council.
CoHSEM will use its manpower to carry out inspection during theory and practical examinations and scrutinised the papers.
Thus, there will be significant changes on how the Class XI examinations are conducted, he stated.
Asnikumar further said that a workshop was recently held wherein the teachers were trained on question setting and evaluation.
The reason for this is that an improvement exam would soon be held.
In this, the Council would design a question set and the respective centres would prepare questions based on the same and submit it to CoHSEM.
While for Class XI, It would be a common question, the schools would design and set the questions for improvement examination, and submit it at the same time.
He, however, did not confirm on whether the grading system would be applied in the upcoming Class XI & XII examination, adding that the process is in the final stage but awaiting final approval from the government.
Stating that the pressure on students from parents/guardians to secure high marks would ease with the efforts to end the trend of marks; he said that NEP 2020 includes many areas on skill and vocational training.
He also said that there would be no arts and science distinction, adding that a student studying physics could take a history course.
He then said that teachers are overloaded and overwhelmed, which is in turn, affecting in bring about quality education.
Thus, he urged parents and guardians to have the students go to study at academies to learn at least one skill not related to books.
This would help them in their future, he asserted.
The function was attended by Wangoi ZEO Arambam Anilkumar as guest of honour and DM College of Arts retired principal Moi rangthem Ibohal Singh as president.
