Imphal, July 05 2025:
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Churachandpur district under the banner of Churachandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC) have suspended their agitation after the government assured to fulfil three of the six demands they submitted to the Governor earlier this year.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club on Saturday, CMUC convener Moirangthem Baleswar said that the committee had submitted memorandums outlining their six-point charter of demands to the Governor on March 13 and May 21, followed by a reminder on June 26 with a five-day deadline to act.
With no positive response forthcoming, IDPs launched sit-in protests on July 3.Baleswar said that the Governor invited them for a meeting on the same day.
Although an understanding was reached during the meeting, the protest continued until the committee received an official assurance.
On July 4, the Governor's secretary again called the committee for further discussion and assured that a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) would be assigned at the Bishnupur DC office to facilitate issuance of essential documents such as birth certificates, domicile certificates, residential and Scheduled Caste certificates.
An IT personnel would also be deputed to support the process.
The secretary also arranged a meeting with the chief secretary later that day, during which the latter assured that IDP students from Churachandpur would receive an education support package, including free study materials and scholarships from nursery to Class 12 .
The chief secretary also assured that IDPs would be accommodated at the pre fabricated houses in Phubala and Kwakta until they are able to return to their ancestral homes.
Following the government's assurance on three of their six demands, the committee resolved to suspend their protest for the time being.
However, Baleswar warned that the agitation may resume if the remaining demands are not addressed.
