Imphal, August 29 2025:
Khangembam Kuleshwar, chairman of Film Forum Manipur (FFM), has expressed concern over the future of Manipur's cinema industry, citing the fact that only two cinema halls are currently operational in Imphal.
FFM observed its 21st foundation day at the auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) at Palace Compound, here, today.
Addressing the function as president, Kuleshwar elaborated that Manipur once had around 60 cinema halls, mostly in Imphal but today only two viz Tanthapolis Cinema (erstwhile Shanker Talkies) and Kumecs Cinema are operational in the city.
He said that most of the cinema halls have been converted into schools, shopping malls or other establishments.
Noting that the culture of visiting cinema halls is vanishing, he added that it would be wrong to assume that Manipuri cinema is thriving.
Upgrading old cinema halls to modern standards would cost crores, encompassing aspects like sound systems and interior decor, he said.
Kuleshwar also pointed out that visiting cinema halls has become costly, with expenses totalling around Rs 500 per person, including entry tickets and travel fares.
The FFM chairman said that they are planning to open cinema halls in Kakching, Moirang, Lamlai, and other locations.
Additionally, FFM is also considering launching a mobile cinema equipped with high-quality sound and visuals, he added.
He maintained that the initiative, if successful, would not only boost the Manipuri film industry but also provide people in rural areas a chance to experience cinema.
Kuleshwar appealed to film professionals to adhere to FFM guidelines and produce films that can be enjoyed by people of all age groups.
He also mentioned that the Central Government recognized film as an industry in 1998.Khurai AC MLA L Sushindro Meitei was the chief guest of the function.
He said that artists, particularly those working in film, shumang leela, and music have become easy targets for people who occasionally ban film screenings, shumang leela performances, and music concerts.
He urged the people to understand that artists make their living through their work, and banning their performances impacts their livelihood.
MSFDS secretary Sunzu Bachaspatimayum, who was the guest of honour, expressed desire for FFM to work towards reviving the culture of cinema halls.
He stated that MSFDS has been working towards establishing Manipur as a film-making hub not just in North East India but in Southeast Asia, through initiatives such as workshops, festivals, and film laboratories.
MSFDS established the Cine Archives in 2021, archiving notable films like Brojendrogee Luhongba and Ishanou, he said and added that work is underway to restore Imagi Ningthem too.
He noted that MSFDS has the infrastructure to archive both digital films and celluloid films.
Kumbi AC MLA S Premchandra also attended the programme as guest of honour.
As part of the observance, simple gifts were presented to FFM advisory board members and legal advisors.
Cultural items were also showcased by the members of constituent guilds/associations of FFM .
