Imagi Meira questions inaction against Kuki MLAs

Imphal, January 29 2024: Seeking appropriate action against the ten Kuki legislators for their "unethical conduct" in de-manding separate adminis- tration outside the State of Manipur, volunteers of Imagi Meira staged a protest in the vicinity of Manipur Legis-lative Assembly complex at Thangmeiband this afternoon.

The volunteers marched towards the Manipur Legislative Assembly complex demanding to know why the State Assembly had failed to take action against the ten Kuki legislators whose aim was to create a separate administration for Kukis.

Manipur police and Central paramilitary force personnel stationed at the Assembly gate intercepted the volunteers at the spot.

Thereafter, they turned back after speaking to Assembly staff.

Speaking to the media, Thokchom Sujata, convenor, Imagi Meira stated that as per Manipur Legislative Assembly authority, the Spea- ker and the Joint Secretary are currently out of State.

The officials have assured that upon their return, the demands raised by Imagi Meira will be promptly discussed, she said.

Decrying the prolonged inaction of the House and the Speaker against the ten Kuki legislators for eight months, Sujata maintained that the Assembly's inability to function properly is a clear indicator of the State Government's weakness.

The Imagi Meira convenor also recalled that except Chairman Sapam Nishikant, no other committee members turned up at the meeting convened by the Committee on Privileges and Ethics on December 21 to examine the alleged unethical conduct of Kuki legislators.

The postponed meeting has not been reconvened till date, she pointed out.

Expressing anger at the situation, she remarked that if the legislators are incapable of running the Assembly, they should convert the Manipur Legislative Assembly complex into a public community hall.

She appealed to the Chief Minister to consult with Assembly committees to resolve the pending issue at the earliest.

On another note, Thokchom Sujata suggested the State legislators to pass the charter of demands presented by Arambai Tenggol at Kangla recently at the State Assembly and then submit them to Central Government leaders.

Aside from submitting the charter of demands to Central leaders, she further urged the legislators to pour their sincere efforts into getting the desired results.

The current conflict, which started on May 3, 2023 after ATSUM's rally turned violent at Torbung, has killed over 180 people and displaced thousands of people across several districts.
