Imphal, March 22 2025:
For the first time in the State, Babina Hospital has successfully treated an exceptionally rare and complex medical case.
The case involved a severe form of Pectus Excavatum (also known as "stove-in chest"), a condition where the ribs grow inward into the chest cavity, causing compression of the right lower bronchus.
Additionally, the patient suffered from a ruptured bullae, an abnormal thinning of lung tissue that led to persistent air leakage, said a press release issued by Babina Hospital PRO and media coordinator Pramod Ningombam.
The patient was presented with severe breathing difficulty and a large pneumothorax (air leakage) on the right side.
Despite receiving treatment, including tube placement at multiple hospitals, the air leak persisted, and the patient's condition deteriorated even with oxygen support.
The patient was then referred to Babina Hospital for further intervention.
Under the expert care of Dr Sidartha Lukram, Consultant CTVS Surgeon at Babina Hospital, a thoracotomy (surgical opening of the chest wall) was performed.
The procedure successfully relieved the bronchial compression and repaired the ruptured bullae in the upper lobe.
The surgery was carried out with precision, leading to a successful recovery.
In addition to this groundbreaking achievement, Babina Hospital has now introduced Complex Vascular Surgeries, further expanding its capabilities in providing specialized and life-saving surgical procedures.
This milestone underscores Babina Hospital's commitment to medical excellence and innovation, setting new benchmarks in healthcare for the region, it said.
