Imphal, April 21 2010:
The three women market complexes at the historic Khawramband bazar should be named suitably in the language of the soil, demanded the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) today.
Working President of the body, Thokchom Babulalchand, while talking to reporters right in front of the just about to be completed market complexes, remarked that MEELAL praised the efforts of the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government for constructing the three Ema market complexes in consonance with the modern times.
However, the demand for re-naming the three market complexes with indigenous languages for the last three years since 2008 is yet to materialize.
MEELAL had organised many seminars and public discussions on the matter of renaming the three market-complexes, and had also urged the government for the same on several occasions.
The government had also assured of fulfilling the demand of the MEELAL.
However, when the three market complexes are almost ready to be inaugurated, the government has forgotten its earlier assurance, and has put up signboards as "Luxmi Keithel" on one of the market buildings.
Considering the attitude of the government, the MEELAL could have resolved to ransack the market buildings, the working president said recalling an earlier incident in which the stone plaque written in wrong script at the BT fly-over had been damaged by some unknown persons.
The matter became a public issue at that time, Babulalchand said.
The MEELAL volunteers are busy engaged with other programmes, he said and added that they are not in favour of destructive activities.
That is why MEELAL is urging the government once again to reconsider the demand of naming the market building in the local language that suits the modern time.
The Luxmi Keithel should be changed as Emoinu Keithel, he demanded adding that other places like Allu Galli and Dhramasala whould also be changed with words suited with the soil.
If not, MEELAL will start taking up appropriate action.
