Imphal, October 20 2025:
With tens of thousands of people flocking Khwairamband Keithel these days for shopping ahead of the State's biggest festival, Ningol Chakkouba, volunteers of six student bodies today carried out a drive against hiking prices of goods.
In the course of the drive which started at around 2.30 pm, shops which did not display price lists and stalls which were selling rotten fruits were asked to close.
The student bodies also asked police to ensure that the defaulting shopkeepers sell goods at the prices fixed by CAF&PD.
Speaking about their drive, the six student bodies' coordinator Hijam Roshan said that these days every family is coming to Khwairamband Keithel and adjoining markets for shopping.
He said that they were carrying out the drive for the second time to check shopkeepers/traders taking undue advantage of the shopping spree by hiking prices of goods.
He said that many shops dealing in essential commodities were not displaying price lists and they were asked to shut down for around 20 minutes.
Moreover, police were asked to see that all the shops display price lists.
Roshan said that traders/shopkeepers who are found cheating consumers by hiking prices would be seen as anti-people.
He also asked all the shopkeepers to sell goods at their original prices.
He further appealed to all the people to use local products in the Ningol Chakkouba festival as far as possible.
Meanwhile, Weight and Measures Department has started checking the weights of weighing stones used in selling goods at Khwairamband Keithel.
The camp of checking weights of weighing stones was launched today under the supervision of Weight and Measures Controller K Bono.
On the first day today, weighing stones used by street vendors were checked.
The weighing stones which were found lighter than the standard weights were seized by the officials.
It is said that the camp will go on till October 22 .
