Water levels recede

As there was no or little rainfall in most parts of the State from September 17 till 6 pm of September 18, water levels of all rivers have started receding steadily but many low lying areas flooded by breaching of river banks and overflowing rivers remain inundated.
According to the daily flood report obtained from the Main Flood Control Room of Water Resources Department, there was little or no rainfall in most parts of Manipur from 6 am of September 17 till 6 pm of Thursday.
As a result, the water level of Imphal River is steadily receding at the two gauge sites of Minuthong and Lilong.
At Minuthong, the water level receded from 785.975 m at 6 am to 785.350 m at 6 in the evening.
It means the water level has fallen below the danger level.
At Lilong, the water level dropped from 782.350 m at 6 am to 781.750 m at 6 pm today.
Although the water level of the Imphal River has receded, it is still flowing above the flood level.
The flood level of the Imphal River at Lilong is 781.350 m.The level of Iril River has also receded below the warning level.
Its water level receded from 787.200 m at 6 am to 786.300 m at Irilbung gauge site.
The level of the Nambul River has also dropped from 781.675 m at 6 am to 781.425 m at 6 pm at Thong Nambonbi.
Although the level of the Nambol River receded from 773.450 m at 6 am to 773.300 m at 6 pm, the river is still flowing above the warning level.
The Thoubal River is also flowing above the flood level although water level at Thoubal Bridge receded from 780.725 m at 6 am to 780.525 m at 6 pm today.
The level of Manipur River at Ithai Barrage dropped from 769.450 m at 6 am to 769.230 m at 6 pm.
All the five gates of Ithai Barrage are open while Imphal Barrage has its four gates opened.
Gate no 5 and gate no 6 of the Thoubal Barrage have also been pulled by three metre while other gates are kept closed.
The breached embankment of the Iril River at Kshetri Bengoon Awang Leikai, Imphal East district as well other portions where the river was overflowing was restored and plugged yesterday.
But many low lying areas of Imphal East including residential areas and paddy fields still remain flooded.
Many areas of Kongpal, Porompat, Khurai, Ayangpalli, Soibam Leikai, Nongmeibung, Chekon, Kongba, Ucheckon, and Wagkhei are still inundated.
Nonetheless, the water level has been receding steadily.
Both JNIMS Hospital complex and Porompat Water Supply plant remained flooded till this evening.
As such, normal functions of JNIMS Hospital remain suspended.
Normal activities of the hospital are likely to remain suspended until the hospital complex is totally dry and the complex is fully sanitised.
With its reservoir contaminated by flood waters.
Porompat Water Supply Plant will suspend supplying potable water to the public until the contaminated water is pumped out and the reservoir is cleaned, said one official of the water supply plant.
Several Government de-partments/offices located at Porompat district headquarters including Imphal East DC office, Porompat police station, Imphal East SP office etc are currently flooded.
Many schools and colleges in Imphal East too remain flooded.
