Imphal, July 05 2025:
A pony gave birth in the middle of a road at Lamphel Sanakeithel today amid concerns over the dwindling populatioh of the horse breed.
Pony, which is deeply associated with the history and culture of Manipur, has been facing a significant decline in its population even though efforts are being made to conserve and protect this iconic horse breed.
The incident at Lamphel Sanakeithel, where a pony gave birth on a busy road highlights the urgent need for collective efforts to ensure their welfare and conservation.
As the pony population dwindles due to increasing road fatalities and other threats, questions have emerged about whether there is anyone to protect this horse breed.
A deeply concerning issue is that ponies are forced to roam in search of food, resorting to eating garbage and plastic waste, highlighting the scarcity of grazing ground and care for these animals.
The frequent sight of dead or injured ponies on Manipur's roads is also a grim reality that demands attention and action.
The sight of a pony giving birth on a road is particularly alarming, as pregnant ponies about to deliver need close supervision and care from trained handlers, not the risks associated with being on a busy road.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, a group of individuals who were at Lamphel expressed concern that ponies are forced to roam the roads due toa lack of grazing grounds and shelter.
They urged the authorities to launch genuine conservation initiatives to protect these animals.
Expressing concern that ponies may disappear, they added that it was heart wrenching to witness a pony delivering a foal in the middle of a road, exposing them to unnecessary dangers.
"Who will come to conserve these animals, which are intricately woven into Manipur's history and an integral part of Sagol Kangjei, if not us?" they questioned.
Warning that the disappearance of ponies would mean losing a vital part of Manipur's history and cultural heritage, they called on the Government and the pony associations to make concerted efforts with dedication to protect and preserve them.
