CorCom doffs hat to labour movement

Imphal, April 30 2024: CorCom has categorically asserted that the National struggle must go hand in hand with the labour movement.

Greeting all the working class people of the world on the occasion of May Day, a statement issued by CorCom asserted that work culture is the backbone of a society's economy and workers are the bedrock of a Nation's self-reliance.

This year's May Day theme is "Social Justice and Decent Work for All" and it alludes to the fact that farmers and workers are still living under harsh and difficult conditions.

There is an urgent need to enact an effective policy under which farmers and workers are given their rights and opportunities, and freed from exploitation, it said.

Since conflicts erupted between the working class and the capitalist class, workers were exploited and suppressed to an unspeakable level.

The lion's share of the workers' earnings was concentrated in the hands of a few capitalists, it said.

The condition of workers across the world was more or less similar.

That was why Karl Marx coined the slogan "Workers of the World, Unite" in his book Communist Manifesto.

Exploitation and suppression of workers brought about by the Industrial Revolution gave birth to National struggles and the international communist movement, it said.

The oppressed farmers took the central role in the National struggles of China, Vietnam and Cuba.

Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung once said that it was the workers and farmers who stood most valiantly against colonialism.

Lamyanba Hijam Irabot's movement against British colonialism and feudalism was a part of the workers' movement seen in Asia, the CorCom said.

The sovereignty and freedom being enjoyed by different countries today are gifts of the workers' movement, it asserted.

Although farmers and workers are still struggling against colonialism and feudalism, their sufferings have not been addressed.

In the face of capitalism and the all pervasive neo-liberal economic policies, workers across the world and more particularly those living in colonised countries have been staring at a very bleak future, it said.

With more and more public sector undertakings being sold to private companies/firms, workers have been left without any job security, it continued.

Almost 80 per cent of the workers in Manipur (Kangleipak) have been living without any social security.

The Government controlled by the capitalist class has no empathy for the working class.

The condition of workers in Manipur is alarmingly bad.

There are numerous instances of those in power usurping the rights and opportunities of workers and farmers, the CorCom said.

The fact that 80 per cent of the State's workers are working in the unorganised sector is a clear testimony of the difficulties being faced by the workers, it said.

Still then, farmers who suffered the scourges of poverty more acutely always shouldered the greatest responsibility in the revolutionary movements as testified by China's liberation movement, it continued.

With more and more marginal farmers selling off their fields to wealthy people who are not residents of their village, a new class of 'absentee landlord' is emerging in the State, it remarked.

Saying that workers have a big role in abolishing the political system controlled by the capitalist class, the CorCom asserted that the condition of Manipur deteriorated to the extreme it was forcibly emerged into the India Union.

When Manipur has been stripped of the power to formulate its own political and economic policies, it is impossible for farmers and workers to lead a secure life.

Economic development or security will remain a mirage until and unless there is political freedom, it asserted.

All the workers' movements seen in different parts of the world served as harbingers of revolution.

Workers of Manipur (Kangleipak) must also shoulder this responsibility, it said.

The National struggle must go hand in hand with the labour movement, it added.
