Imphal, July 20 2023:
Denouncing excesses committed by some people against two women, Chief Minister N Biren has promised he would see that all the perpetrators are awarded befitting punishment.
Taking strong exception to the act of molesting and parading two women naked in the course of the violent crisis which erupted on May 3, Chief Minister N Biren held a press conference at his official residence this evening.
Biren stated that Saikul police station received a report on May 18 about the inhumane and heinous crime that took place on May 4 .
As the crime spot falls under the jurisdiction of Nongpok Sekmai police station, the case was referred to the particular police station on June 21 .
In the meantime, a video clip of the particular incident went viral in social media in the last couple of days.
The State Government immediately instructed the authorities concerned to take up necessary action, Biren said.
The same incident has also been deliberated at a meeting of the MLAs of ruling parties.
The meeting, while condemning the incident in the strongest terms, resolved to ensure that all the perpetrators are awarded befitting punishment, Biren said.
The State has been witnessing violence, killing and arson since May 3 .
However, the State could not take up necessary and prompt action with regard to the particular crime as information or report about the incident was not received in time, Biren said.
"We were deeply hurt on learning that such a horrific crime has been committed at a time when the people have been vehemently condemning the killing of Lucy Maring and another woman at Kwakeithel", he said.
People ought to and have been condemning all such crimes against humanity, he said.
Saying that the Government has been working hard to take up all necessary and befitting action against all the culprits, the Chief Minister appealed to all the people to make the particular incident the end of all such crimes.
The Government will plead to award maximum punishment to all the culprits and even capital punishment, if possible, Biren said.
He appealed to all the people not to pose unnecessary hurdles to movement of security forces.
All attacks at fringe and peripheral areas will be met by Central and State security forces, Biren said.
There is no question of the Government differentiating the people on the basis of ethnicity.
Nonetheless, the Government will face the illegal immigrants in a befitting manner, the Chief Minister asserted.
To a query, he said that two individuals allegedly involved in the particular crime have been arrested.
Others involved in the particular case would be arrested soon, he added.
Many Ministers and MLAs were also present at the press conference.
