Imphal, July 20 2023:
If only the Prime Minister had spoken out earlier and paid attention to solve the issue in time, the crisis could have been avoided from taking a worse turn, said Dr Nimaichand Luwang, senior spokesperson of Janata Dal (United) .
Representing 10 like minded Opposition parties at a press meet at Manipur Press Club Imphal, Dr Nimaichand Luwang said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had remained silent for about 79 days before he spoke for the first time on the Manipur crisis today.
More than two months after violence first broke out on May 3, people in the valley and the hills alike are suffering immensely.
Many lives have been lost, but the PM chose to remain silent unfortunately, said Dr Nimaichand Luwang.
He said representatives of the ten political parties had gone to Delhi and tried several times to meet the Prime Minister.
However, no appointment was given to them while the PM remained silent.
Now, a viral video has surfaced which shows two women mercilessly parading nude by a mob.
The video has rocked the whole of India and the Parliament.
It has invited condemnations from all sections.
We, the ten political parties, too strongly condemn the very unfortunate incident, he said.
The incident was said to have happened on May 4, a day after violence broke out in Manipur.
What was the Government doing for the last two months? asked Dr Nimaichand Luwang.
He said on May 18, a complaint in connection with the incident was allegedly filed with the Saikul police station at Kangpokpi district.
As the incident allegedly took place at an area under Nongpok Sekmai police station, the case was transferred to the latter on June 21 .
Dr Nimaichand continued that the video went viral on June 19 and the PM broke his silence and spoke about the incident today.
PM Modi condemned the incident in the strongest terms and assured that all accused will not be spared.
Also, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has also condemned the atrocities against the two women in the strongest terms.
The CM has even promised to give capital punishment to the culprits, said Dr Nimaichand.
While commenting on the PM's strong words over the incident, Dr Nimaichand said the Pm spoke just before the Parliament's Monsoon Session and asserted that his response to the crisis was late.
