House destroyed over land dispute

Tensions flared on Monday in Arongkhong Makhong area, under Khangabok assembly constituency in Thoubal district, after a land dispute led to the destruction of a house, a shop, and portions of newly constructed pillars, forcing police to step in and disperse the crowd by firing tear gas.
The incident took place around 9:30 am Monday when a large crowd gathered and destroyed the house, shop and some pillars of Waikhom Somendro (53) s/o late W Chaobhan.
Police arrived and brought the situation under control by firing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
According to local sources, people in the area raised objection over construction of Somen-dro's house and annexe structures on the Arong River bank on the Khangabok side.
They pointed out that the construction extending beyond the allowed limits and blocking a road.
However, Somendro's family claimed there had been an earlier understanding allowing them to leave space for public passage.
Amid the altercation, a crowd from Khangabok reportedly gathered and damaged the property.
Meanwhile, locals from Khangabok said the house and shop were built too close to the road, causing inconvenience to passers-by.
They claimed to have asked the owner to remove the part of the building blocking the way, but when their requests were ignored, the public decided to take matters into their own hands and demolished the structures.
