Imphal, March 22 2025:
BABINA Hospital has successfully treated an exceptionally rare and complex medical case, marking a significant milestone in Manipur's surgical advancements.
According to a statement, the case involved a severe form of Pectus Excavatum, also known as 'stove-in chest" in which the ribs grew inward into the chest cavity, compressing the right lower bronchus.
Additionally, the patient suffered from a ruptured bullae, an abnormal thinning of lung tissue, resulting in persistent air leakage.
The statement further informed that the patient initially presented with severe breathing difficulties and a large pneumothorax (air leakage) on the right side.
Despite receiving treatment, including tube placement at multiple hospitals, the air leak persisted, and the patient's condition deteriorated even with oxygen support.
The patient was then referred to BABINA Hospital for further medical intervention.
It said that BABINA Hospital consultant CTVS surgeon Dr Sidartha Lukram, led the surgical team in performing a thoracotomy, a procedure involving the surgical opening of the chest wall.
The surgery successfully relieved the bronchial compression and repaired the ruptured bullae in the upper lobe, leading to successful recovery.
BABINA Hospital has introduced Complex Vascular Surgeries, further expanding its capabilities in providing specialised and life-saving surgical procedures.
"This milestone underscores BABINA Hospital's commitment to medical excellence and innovation, setting new benchmarks in healthcare for the region," it added.
