COCOMI resumes relief efforts, fears disease spread

After halting flood relief activities due to the 10-day shutdown call which was lifted on Tuesday, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) resumed distribution of relief items to the flood-hit denizens from Wednesday.
In a release, COCOMI informed that its team led by convenor Khuraijam Athouba extended essentials to people of Keikhu Kabui Khul, Meitei Pangal relief camp at Kairang Chingya, Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal and Ayangpalli.
The COCOMI relief distributions covered Bashikhong Panthoibi relief camp (155 families), Kongba Irong (150 families), Heikrumakhong Lanka (130 persons), Khurai Chingangbam Leikai (14 families), Soibam Leikai Citizens' Club (60 persons), Kongpal Social Development Organisation (20 families), Kongpal Khaidem Leikai (56 families), Oriental Youth Organisation, Kongpal (10 families), Thambalkhong YWC (70 families), Uchekon Naharol Lamyan Club (20 families), Kongpal Kongkham Makha Leikai (12 families), Public Club Top Khongnangkhong (30 families), Khurai Ningthoubung PFC, Heigrumak-hong (one water tanker), Uchiwa Hayel Ekop Ningthou (17 families), Thambalkhong Turen Mapan (22 families), WAL Club Angom Leikai, Heingang Mayai Leikai Panthoibi (37 families), Yonglan Leirak NSK Club (two water tankers), WangkheiPuja Lampak (24 families and one water tanker) and Ayangpalli Ningthem Pukhri Makha Leirak (20 families) .
The release further informed that a survey team of the committee inspected flood ravaged areas and found that several areas including Nongmeibung Pung Makhong, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Yonglan Leirak, Keikhu and surrounding farmlands, Heingang area, Basikhong Wangkhei Loukon are still waterlogged.
While opining authorities concerned appear to be waiting for the waterlogged southern side of Ayangpalli to dry up naturally as there is no efforts to pump out the stagnant water, COCOMI pointed out that such inordinate delay in addressing the dire situation has resulted in contamination of the flood waters, spread of diseases.
Considering the inconveniences faced by the people of the area, COCOMI urged the department concerned to take immediate action for draining the contaminated water using water pumps.
It also highlighted the need for spraying bleaching powder in residential areas which were flooded.
The release said that COCOMI has started organising medical camps for the flood-hit denizens and urged all concerned to visit its office or contact mobile numbers 9863738741/9366813406/9612313445 in case of requirement to conduct medical camp.
COCOMI also informed that Flood Relief Emergency Helpline Centre set up at Lamlong and Kongba Bazar shall cease operation but remain functional from its head office at Lamphelpat.
