Imphal, June 10 2025:
Indian Journalists' Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the "brutal assault" on two reporters from Impact TV News by Central Reserve Police Force CRPF) personnel on June 7 around 10 pm while the journalists were covering a public protest in Kwakeithel area.
IJU stated that the assault took place despite the reporters identifying themselves as media persons, and that the CRPF personnel also used abusive language.
In a press statement issued Tuesday, IJU expressed solidarity with its affiliate, the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), and the Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM).
The union described the incident as an "egregious act of violence and intimidation against journalists discharging their professional duties", emphasising that such "acts of impunity against the media are unacceptable and represent a direct attack on press freedom and democratic values" .
IJU president and former member of Press Council of India, Geetartha Pathak underscored the severity of the situation, stating that the brutal assault on journalists in Manipur is a stark reminder of the increasing hostility faced by media professionals in the line of duty.
"We demand thorough and impartial enquiry into this incident and strict punishment for the perpetrators to ensure such acts are not repeated.
The safety of journalists must be non-negotiable," Pathak said IJU secretary general and International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) vice-president Sabina Inderjit echoed the same concerns, noting that the repeated targeting of journalists in Manipur is deeply concerning and undermines the fundamental right to freedom of expression.
She urged authorities to "take immediate action to bring the culprits to justice and ensure a safe working environment for the media".
The statement further said that UU supports the AMWJU and EGM's decision to file an FIR regarding the incident and their protest action of leaving all editorials blank for June 8 publications with the common slogan: "AMWJU & EGM Condemn repeated assault and intimidation of Journalists" .
The union reiterated its demand for an immediate and transparent enquiry and "exemplary punishment" for those responsible to deter future attacks on journalists.
IJU affirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of journalists across India, working with its affiliates and global partners, including the IFJ .
