Imphal, April 26 2025:
The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has demanded implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in higher education within a week, warning that they will launch a series of democratic protests if their demand is not met.
At a media interaction at Kwakeithel today, Nongthombam Thoithoiba, DESAM's secretary general, expressed uncertainty about whether the NEP 2020 has been implemented for undergraduate studies in Manipur.
Urging the authorities to clarify within a week whether the BA and BSc courses will be a four-year programme under NEP 2020, he warned that students and DESAM will launch protests if the demand isn't met.
He added that the failure of the Higher and Technical Education Department to respond to Manipur University's query on implementing four-year undergraduate courses is an insult to NEP 2020, and a clear lack of direction.
Thoithoiba said the Chief Secretary and the Education Commissioner must take responsibility for any consequences stemming from the non-implementation of NEP 2020 in the State.
Noting that COHSEM announced the Class XII exam results yesterday and college admissions under the Higher and Technical Education Department will start soon, he added that students, however, remain uncertain about the implementation of NEP 2020.Despite repeated assurances from the authorities about implementing the four-year BA/BSc programme, it hasn't materialized yet, he said.
Saying that Manipur's college education system is marred by issues like shortage of teaching staff, he added that no steps have been taken so far to fill up the vacant posts.
He said that they initially blamed the politicians for the deteriorated education system but the lack of corrective measures even under President's Rule is concerning.
He urged the Governor and the Chief Secretary to take steps to streamline the education system and implement NEP 2020 in Manipur properly.
