Imphal, August 18 2010: CPI MLA, N Mangi today called for end to the habit of earning easy money by passing false information to the security forces.

Attending the Asti ceremony of Naorem Birkram of Khoijumantabi in Bishnupur district who died in the custody of the security personnel, the MLA said that some persons in the insurgency prone state of Manipur are indulging in passing false information to the security forces and police commandos to get easy money.

MLA N.Mangi said many people of his Kumbi Assembly Constituency have been victims of such false information.

Let such anti-social activities be ended and "let's adapt to the habit of working hard for a livelihood and live like men of principles," Mangi called for.

Stating that the Joint Action Committee formed in connection with the custodial death of Naorem Birkram is demanding an inquiry into his death and seeking punishment for those security and police commandos personnel involved in the incident, he urged upon the Chief Minister to translate the demands into work at the earliest.

Mention may be made that Naorem Birkram, picked up by a combined team of Bishnupur district police commandos and troops of 12 Maratha Li from his home on the night of August 11 last along with a cousin brother, died in custody.

He was reported to have died while the combined force was preparing an official statement to hand him over along with his cousin N Bungochandra to the nearest police station at Kumbi the same night.

He fainted while the personnel preparing documents to be handed over to the police and died at a camp of the Assam Rifles nearby.

The doctor at the post declared him brought dead, the FIR case registered with the police reportedly mentioned.

Bungochand has been released, Mangi told reporters.

Decrying the custodial death, the JAC demanded an inquiry into the incident.

They have lodged a complaint with the Chief Minister, pressing him to conduct a magisterial probe into the incident and to take necessary action against the security and police commandos involved in the case.

MLA Mangi while clarifying that he is in no way connected with the JAC, said that no agreement was reached between the JAC and the government regarding the demand put forward by the JAC.

The fifth day death ceremony of Bikram was held today with a large gathering at the community hall of the Khoijumantabi Maning Leikai.

Offering of floral tributes to the deceased marked the occasion.
