Senapati, March 16 2026:
The Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) has expressed strong opposition to the recent notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) mandating the playing or singing of the Indian National song Vande Mataram before the National anthem Jana Gana Mana, during specific high-level official functions and in educational institutions.
In a statement, the student body said it stands in line with the call of the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) in opposing what it termed as the "forceful imposition" of the National song.
While acknowledging the cultural and historical significance of both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana, SDSA stated that it strongly opposes the imposition of Vande Mataram, claiming that the song carries deep religious and devotional connotations which may conflict with the beliefs and conscience of the Naga people.
SDSA lamented that the imposition of such directives is unnecessary and encroaches upon the rights of various communities to celebrate then-own identities and traditions.
It added that the essence of unity in diversity, a cornerstone of democratic ethos, should not be undermined by mandates that disregard the distinct cultural heritage of the Nagas.
SDSA urged school authorities and administrators in Senapati district to refrain from implementing the directives in educational institutions.
It warned that any attempt to enforce the mandate would be viewed as a violation of the community's rights and liberties, and would not be tolerated.
The association also called upon the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to reconsider the directive and engage with diverse communities to foster a more inclusive approach that respects the diverse cultural landscape of the subcontinent.
