LDA chairman highlights importance of wetlands

While conveying greetings to the people on the occasion of World Wetlands Day observance, Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman M Asnikumar has highlighted the significance of wetlands in ensuring the wellbeing of human beings.
"This year's theme, "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing," invites us to reflect on the intrinsic connection between healthy wetland ecosystems and the prosperity of communities," Asnikumar said in a message.
He pointed out that Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands stand as invaluable assets, contributing significantly to the well-being of the people of Manipur.
"As the chairman of Loktak Development Authority, I am aware of the intricate balance required to maintain these ecosystems for the benefit of both nature and humanity," Asnikumar said.
Pointing out that wetlands play a pivotal role in supporting human livelihoods through fisheries, agriculture, and other ecosystem services, the chairman maintained that Loktak Lake, as the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, is not only a source of pride but also a lifeline for numerous communities, shaping their cultural heritage and wellbeing.
The theme of this year's World Wetlands Day underscores the importance of recognising wetlands not merely as natural resources but as contributors to our overall well-being, Asnikumar said, while calling upon every individual to acknowledge the interdependence between our actions and the health of wetland ecosystems.
The message further stated, "Community participation is the linchpin of successful wetland conservation.
The Loktak Development Authority is committed to fostering partnerships with local communities, governmental bodies, NGOs, and educational institutions to create a collective front for the conservation and preservation of Loktak Lake" .
It continued, "It is imperative to raise awareness among the residents about the invaluable services provided by wetlands and instil a sense of responsibility in safeguarding these ecosystems.
Through collaborative efforts, we can ensure the sustainable use of Loktak Lake, promoting the wellbeing of both nature and the communities it nurtures" .
The LDA chairman concluded the message with the statement, "On this World Wetlands Day, let us renew our commitment to the cause of wetland conservation.
Together, let us build a future where Loktak Lake thrives, ensuring the well-being of present and future generations" .
