President's intervention sought

Imphal, July 21 2013:
Even as the Royal Council of Sana Konung has sought the intervention of President of India over the attempt being made by the State Government to take over the Palace forcibly in violation of Article 26 of the Indian Constitution, several art and culture organizations of the State today joined hands in protesting the State Cabinet's decision to take over the Sana Konung for developing it into a historical monument.
Members of 27 different organizations including KIMACS and UFO took part in the protest and guarded the Palace in traditional martial arts attire.

The organizations which took part in the protest were Hueiyen Lallong Thang-Ta Association, Irilbung, MISIKHOL, Khurai, Kangleipak Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Kongba, MITTAL, Sagolband Salam Leikai, Langol Lukhoi Thang-Ta Shingdam Shang, Ningthem Pukhri Mapal, Sana Leibak, Nambol, ACHIPA, Nagamapal, MEEHUL, Okram Chuthek, SIITYAI, Khurai, PAHULASI, Kwakeithel, MITHASCA, Khurai, KETTS, Kongpal Chanam Leikai, HLMTTCA, Kakching, Yehou Inaat Singdam Lup, Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Wangoi, KCA, Kumbi, Kanglei Thang-Ta Lup, Langol, LIKLAM, Khurai, KANGLASHA, Wakha, HULA, Keishamthong, MASSTA, Kangabam Leikai, NIKO, Koirengei, NICTA, Koirengei, Paona Memorial Art and Culture, Thoubal Wangkhem, Eastern Kala Vidyalaya and Hueiyen Lallong Thang-Ta Association, Yumnam Huidrom.
Talking to media persons, a representative of KIMACS said that Sana Konung is a living institution which upholds the customary rights of the people.
The decision of the State Government to takeover the Palace for developing it into a historical monument affects the sentiments of the people, who have deep regards for the King.
The Government should revoke its decision in the interest of the people, he enjoined.
Meanwhile, Legal advisor of Sana Konung Puyam Tomcha informed that the Royal Council has sought the intervention of the President of India over the attempt being made by the State Government to take over the Palace forcibly in violation of Article 26 of the Indian Constitution.
Article 26 of Constitution of India guarantees freedom to manage religious affairs subject to public order, morality and health.
The Royal Council has also submitted a memorandum to the Governor regarding this matter, he Tomcha added.
Meanwhile, Shillong Manipuri Students' Union (SMSU) has objected to the proposal of the State Government to take over Sana Konung and said that the voice of the people should be heard by the Government before taking any final decision in this regard.
