Parents' body, AISF MSC differ on PMT

Imphal, July 21 2013: Contrary to Manipur MBBS/BDS 2013 Entrance Examination Parents/Guardians Association insisting that the recent Supreme Court decree against NEET-UG scheme of examination clearly entails that respective States conduct MBBS/BDS entrance examination, All India Students' Federation (AISF) Manipur State Council has demanded that counselling process be initiated for candidates who have already qualified in the NEET examination.

In a statement issued today, the guardians' body strongly criticising indecision of the State Cabinet on the MBBS/BDS examination issue pointed out that the Supreme Court quashing the NEET scheme leaves no room for argument as the apex Court ruling had declared notifications issued by the Medical Council of India and Dental Council of India with regard to implementation of 'one nation one examination' (NEET-UG) as unconstitutional.

As NEET scheme of examination has been invalidated by the Court decree it clearly means that State governments should start relevant process to conduct entrance test for pursuing MBBS/BDS courses, said the statement issued by the Association secretary.

Ridiculing spokesperson Minister M Okendro who stated that the State Government will decide on whether or not to conduct MBBS/BDS entrance test after assessing medical test model of other States, the Association cautioned that defying the Supreme Court order would amount to violation of directive of the country's highest judicial system.

Apart from need to comply with the supreme Court ruling the State Government should not take any step that would compromise career of 5756 candidates, asserted the Association.

On the otherhand, an AISF release pointed out that inspite of quashing NEET examination method the Supreme Court had advised that candidates already enlisted among the NEET merit list should be entertained admission in medical institutions by conducting counselling programmes by the respective States.

Noting that 2013 candidates from Manipur have qualified in the NEET-UG and subsequently complied with form fill-up procedures to attend counselling programmes, AISF prevailed upon the Government of Manipur to revoke the Cabinet decision that NEET would not be applicable for the current academic session.

While States like Assam, Nagaland, Jharkhand, Odisha and Delhi have already started admission process based on NEET-UG 2013 merit list, the Government of Manipur reluctant to follow suit is unjustifiable, said the students' body.

Reminding the State Government that MCI had set August 2 as the deadline for completing counselling process for candidates selected on State quota, the AISF suggested that a viable mechanism be worked out under which neither the NEET-UG successful candidates are victimised nor candidates expecting conduct of PMT examination feel betrayed.
