Imphal, August 17 2025:
Khurai MLA L Susindro Meitei on Sunday accused the Congress party of surreptitiously scheming to prolong the President's Rule (PR) in the state but publicly denying it, with the ultimate objective to topple the state government.
Responding to media queries on the sidelines of a meritorious award distribution ceremony organised by Leishangthem Sagei Apunba Lup at Meetin Shanglen, Khurai Sajor Leikai, Susindro noted that there are certain people advocating extension of the PR regime though the same persons claim that they are in favour of a popular government fearing public outrage, he said.
The MLA maintained that the five-member Congress MLAs had initiated the process of toppling the government by proposing to move a no-confidence motion, despite lacking the required numbers.
"It is known to all who demanded discussion in the Parliament for bringing the state under the central rule.
People are asking what these five MLAs can possibly do, but they are the ones doing the dirty work.
If they had thought about Manipur, it would have been better," Susindro said.
The MLA further maintained that there are several MLAs belonging to another party, but their hearts are with the Congress, which explained why the party attempted to move the no-confidence motion.
It is not wrong to say that Congress wants to impose PR in the state and overthrow the government, he asserted.
Pointing out that the Congress was the first to have demanded imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, but have since changed their previous stand, Susindro reasoned that legislators of BJP and alliance partners wanted the government to continue.
However, the number of people who didn't want the government to exist was many, and it finally had to go, he said.
His remarks came in the wake of repeated calls for restoration of popular government or fresh elections by the Manipur Congress unit.
"President's rule was first demanded by Congress.
Didn't their MP also demanded President's rule in parliament? They (Cong) keep saying what they cannot do with five MLAs.
However, those five have been the most problematic.
Those five should have worked according to the interests of Manipur," the former minister said.
Susindro also noted that the President's Rule will continue as there are many who favour and demanded President's rule.
"On the outside, these people speak against the imposition of President s rule, but internally they favour it.
Under the existing circumstances, President's rule is likely to continue.
You can see clearly the political drama being played".
President's Rule in Manipur was imposed on February 13 after the then chief minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9.The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.
In his address as chief guest of the event, Susindro also stressed the need for development initiatives within the Leishangthem clan.
He urged the clan elders to conduct a proper census of its members before implementing any welfare programmes.
He stressed the need to identify the weak and those unable to afford education and extend help to them.
The awards ceremony, presided over by Leishangthem Sagei Apunba Lup president Leishangthem Joytombi Singh, honoured 31 students from the clan, including two gold medallists in MA and M Sc, two high scorers in NEET and JEE, and four athletes.
Former ward member of Koutruk GP Leishangthem Upro Singh, Bir Tikendrajit University resident director Leishangthem Suresh, and MPs officer Dr Leishangthem Jeebit attended as guests of honour.
The programme also featured a special general body meeting of the organisation.
