Governor shares strategies for garbage-free Imphal

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, on Friday chaired a high-level meeting with officials of the Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD) at the conference hall of Raj Bhavan, here, to review the "Clean Imphal Action Plan: My City, My Responsibility" .
The meeting focused on devising time-bound short - and long-term strategies to make the city garbage free and improve urban waste management systems.
The team from MAHUD and Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC), led by principal secretary (MAHUD) RK Dinesh, held a detailed and brainstorming discussion with the Governor.
Director (MAHUD/IPR) Ng Uttam, and IMC commissioner K Chandrakumar also attended the meeting, along with other senior officials.
During the session, the principal secretary and director of MAHUD delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Clean Imphal City Campaign, highlighting major sectors such as municipal waste management, solid waste collection, transportation, and disposal.
The officials outlined challenges faced on the ground while showcasing innovative solutions and strategic approaches being developed to address them.
The Governor was briefed on the way-forward plan demonstrating MAHUD's commitment to creating a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
Governor Bhalla advised MAHUD and IMC to intensify Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, conduct cleanliness drives and competitions, promote public participation, and strengthen grievance redressal mechanisms to effectively involve the community in the Clean Imphal initiative.
Acknowledging the efforts of MAHUD and IMC teams, he urged them to implement the action plan in a time-bound manner to realise the vision of a garbage-free Imphal.
A wide range of subjects related to smart waste management were discussed, including the initiation of bioremediation of legacy wastes, Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies, and plans for construction and demolition waste management.
Key proposals included the renovation and augmentation of the existing Solid Waste Management Plant at Lamdeng in Imphal West and the establishment of a new processing facility in Imphal East.
Discussions also covered the strengthening of Imphal Municipal Corporation with enhanced manpower, modern equipment, technical know-how, executive powers, and financial resources.
To ensure strict enforcement of Municipal Bye-Laws and Acts, the proposal seeking deployment of police personnel to assist IMC was also deliberated.
