Imphal, July 06 2025:
Khurai MLA L Susindro on Sunday handed over four newly constructed houses to flood-affected families of Khurai Heikrumakhong, taking the total number of completed houses to six out of eight severely damaged in last month's flood.
The houses were built from the MLA's own sources.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the MLA also announced plan to construct 500 houses for families affected by the recent flood in his constituency who fall below the poverty line.
Construction of 100 houses is already underway as part of the first phase, with beneficiaries selected through draw of lots.
He said that 50 of these houses will be handed over within the current month, and the remaining 400 completed by next year.
To ensure fair distribution, he will sanction 10 houses for each of the 43 polling stations in Khurai AC.
Susindro acknowledged that the houses being built may not be adequate for large families, but said that the initiative is a sincere contribution to help families begin rebuilding their lives.
He expressed satisfaction that some houses were being expanded by the beneficiaries themselves.
Keisam Diamond of Khurai Heikrumakhong, said that his house was destroyed just days before his wedding, forcing him to postpone the ceremony.
With the new house now in place, his wedding is scheduled for November.
The MLA also promised additional support to expand Diamond's house to accommodate his family and the future bride.
Of the eight families whose homes were damaged beyond repair during the flood, work on one house will start Monday, while another is delayed due to a land dispute.
On the broader development front, Susindro assured the public that he would not allow the Imphal Ring Road Project to threaten the historic Ipum Pat.
While expressing support for the stretch of the project from Chairenthong to Top Khongnang Makhong, he cautioned that plans which could affect Ipum Pat are unacceptable.
He questioned whether the project could lead to future expansion that may result in eviction of families living along the route as well as the historic lake, and urged the public to consider the longterm implications.
The MLA said that he envisioned development of an integrated water management system that would divert excess water from Chingkhei Ching Water Supply to Ipum Pat through Khurai Konsam Leikai, and drain surplus water from the lake into the Imphal River via Heikrumakhong Langka.
He urged local residents to protect Ipum Pat by preventing garbage dumping and clearing illegal constructions.
He warned that if residents failed to remove waste and encroachments within a few days, eviction drives would be initiated.
He also recalled his earlier assurance to provide temporary plots to the landless families residing near the banks of the lake until they could buy their own land.
The MLA also criticised the forest department for allegedly refusing to provide earth needed to contain floodwaters, which he claimed worsened flooding in the area.
He said that thousands of flood-affected residents would jointly file a lawsuit against the department.
He also accused the department officials of carrying out arbitrary acts under the President's Rule government.
