Thoubal, April 02 2026:
The Wangjing-Lamding Keithel Shopkeepers Development Association (WLKSDA) has resolved to temporarily refrain from extending donations or any form of monetary assistance to organisations, student bodies and civil society groups, citing severe financial difficulties faced by local traders.
The decision was taken following a sit-in protest staged by shopkeepers at Wangjing-Lamding Keithel, covering both the new and old market areas over unbearable monetary demands imposed upon them.
Speaking to media persons, WLKSDA vice-president Yendrembam Ashakumar said that the prevailing violence in Manipur has significantly affected the livelihood of shopkeepers who depend on daily business for survival.
He stated that declining sales have left many traders in distress, with some unable to repay bank loans, clear interest dues, or even pay shop rents.
He further pointed out that frequent demands for donations from various organisations, student groups and civil society bodies have added to the burden of the already struggling shopkeepers.
"Most businesses are run on bank loans, and the small profits earned are used to sustain families and support children's education," he said.
Recalling that the association had extended all possible support to the public during the peak of the crisis, Ashakumar said the current situation has left the shopkeepers with limited means.
He appealed to all concerned organisations to refrain from seeking donations or monetary assistance for the time being.
The association also urged that no pressure or intimidation be exerted on shopkeepers, maintaining that their present financial condition does not permit them to contribute.
