Minister calls for conserving local fish species

Science and Technology Minister Th Biswajit has advocated promotion of the shrinking local fish varieties.
A launch function of the seven-day 8th State level aquarium exhibition cum flower show and a four-day training workshop on fabrication of aquarium and floriculture for individuals/inmates of the relief camps was held at Manipur Science Aquarium at DM University complex, today.
The programme is being organised by Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) .
At the event, Biswajit said that the locally available fish varieties seem to have been replaced to a great extent by the imported ones.
Stressing on the need to promote the local fish varieties and develop adequate breeding space with the help of MASTEC, the Minister continued that the imported fish varieties present at the aquarium at DMU complex can also be bred and exported to improve the State's economy.
The population of local fish varieties has been declining, he said while advocating utilisation of modern technology to save the local fish varieties from extinction.
Stating that the economy of Manipur has been affected greatly by the ongoing crisis, the Minister appealed to one and all to play their parts in ending the conflict to focus on the developmental aspects.
Violence won't bring anything good, he said and appealed to the parties in conflict to set aside their differences.
Science and Technology Commissioner M Yaiskul Meetei, Director Homila Hongrei and MASTEC Director L Minakanta also attended the programme.
