Earth Day 'Cyclothon' emphasises collective conservation action

Imphal, April 22 2025:
Celebrating the Earth Day, a 12 km Cyclothon was organised on Monday in Imphal City by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM), River Bank Society, Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI) Manipur Chapter, and Manipur Adventure and Mountain Biking Association (MAMBA).
The event, flagged off by principal secretary Arun Kumar Sinha from the western gate of Kangla, was participated by over 300 cyclists, including government officials, environmentalists, journalists, healthcare professionals, and citizens.
The Cyclothon covered Keishampat, Mayai Lambi, Pishumthong, Chingamakha, Babupara, and Sanjenthong before concluding at the directorate's Porompat office.
Addressing the gathering, Arun Kumar underscored the significance of environmental conservation for future generations.
Reflecting on this year's Earth Day theme, "Our Power, Our Planet", he called for collective efforts in afforestation, spring shed conservation, eco-tourism, and the development of eco-friendly villages.
The principal secretary also highlighted India's commitment under COP28 to triple the share of renewable energy by 2030 and called on the public to support this target.
Initiatives such as installation of solar power plants at JNIMS, establishment of a climate change cell, setting up weather stations in all districts, and distribution of electric auto-rickshaws were cited as examples of the government's climate action efforts.
Environment and Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar reminded participants of their shared responsibility to safeguard Earth, advocating sustainable living and a shift away from fossil fuel dependence.
He stressed that promoting bicycles and electric vehicles could play a major role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
AHPI Manipur chapter president and Shija Hospitals chairman cum managing director Dr Kh Palin also addressed the gathering, urging every individual to play their part in protecting
the environment.
