Imphal, May 10 2025:
Keirao MLA L Rameshwar on Saturday blamed the ongoing delay in forming a popular government in the state on power hunger among elected representatives, stating that many MLAs are more interested in becoming chief minister or ministers than addressing the urgent political vacuum in the state.
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Ibudhou Khagemba and Ibudhou Mongyamba shrine at Kiyamgei, Rameshwar disclosed that a meeting of around 16 MLAs was held at the residence of Keishamthong MLA Nishikant Sapam on Friday.
He claimed that 23 MLAs are ready to form a new government but acknowledged that at least 30 are required to stake a claim.
Efforts are underway to bring more MLAs on board, including Yumnam Khemchand, Thokchom Radheshyam, Khumukcham Joykisan, and Salam Rajen, he said.
Once the number is reached, the team will go to the Governor to stake claim.
This is not the time to wait for instructions from the Centre, he added.
Though Rameshwar said he did not personally meet BJP North East in-charge Dr Sambit Patra during his recent visit to the state, he confirmed that MLA Khemchand and Speaker Th Satyabrata had discussions with him.
He expressed confidence that a new government would be formed soon and urged fellow MLAs to prioritise the idea of "nation first, party second".
Regarding the shrine, Rameshwar said that it would be constructed with public contributions and some personal donations, estimating the project cost at around Rs 2 crore.
He appealed to the public to uphold indigenous religion and culture.
Later in the day, the Keirao MLA also inaugurated the newly constructed building of Kiyamgei Mayai Leikai Meira Paibi Women Development Organisation.
