ICAR wraps up Climate-Resilient Fanning Outreach at Khurkhul; women farmers lead

The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat, concluded a two-day Awareness Programme cum Field Day on "Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Livelihood Improvement of SCSP Farmers in Manipur" at Khurkhul Village, Imphal West, on Friday.
Organised under the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture-Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan, the programme aimed to disseminate NICRA technologies such as drought-tolerant crop varieties, rainwater harvesting, conservation tillage, and integrated nutrient and pest management through interactive sessions and on-farm demonstrations.
Head of Regional Centre Dr Soibam Basanta Singh stressed reviving community ponds for water conservation and promoting millets and pulses for crop diversification.
Senior Scientist Dr Ayam Gangarani Devi highlighted NICRA's role in addressing climate change and sensitising farmers to El Nino-linked shifts, advocating a holistic food-land-water approach to build resilience.
Dr L Kanta Singh briefed farmers on strengthening scientist-farmer linkages as a contingency measure, while Dr Kh Rishikanta Singh outlined central schemes like PMFBY and PM-KISAN.
Technical sessions by Dr Arati Ningombam on integrated pest management.
Dr E Lamalakshmi Devi and Dr Konsam Sarika on improved crop varieties, Dr T Basanta Singh on soil health and water conservation, and Dr N Umakanta on biotech-driven resilient varieties equipped farmers with field-ready tools.
Nirmala Maibam of Green Biotech Ecosolutions Pvt Ltd demonstrated bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides for sustainable use.
Over 60 women farmers from Khurkhul actively joined the sessions and demonstrations, reflecting their growing role in grassroots climate-resilient practices.
With support from NICRA PI Dr Krishnappa Rangappa, ICAR Umiam, agri-inputs including drought-tolerant rice RC Maniphou 15, bio-inputs, DHR-Bengaluru vegetable seed kits, oilseeds, and leaflets were distributed to beneficiaries.
The programme marked another step by ICAR Manipur Centre to strengthen climate-resilient farming through research, technology transfer, and farmer empowerment.
