Street vendors shift trading base

Imphal, May 02 2011: Unlicensed women street vendors from Khwairamband Bazar have started selling their wares at Lamphel Super Market complex from today.

Taking advantage of the new arrangement, people of the surrounding areas too have reserved their own plots leading to a fight for plots at Lamphel as well.

On the other hand, parking of vehicles on either sides of the roads in Khwairamband Bazar area have been restricted from today.

A large number of women street vendors started shifting their trading base from Khwairamband Bazar area to Lamphel Super Market following a State Cabinet decision.

The Cabinet had set May 2 as the deadline for shifting the unlicensed street vendors from Khwairamband Bazar to Lamphel Super Market complex.

Like any other days, women street vendors descended at Khwairamband Bazar in the morning today.

But the police disperse them.

Although the street vendors have initially opposed to the idea of shifting them from Khwairamband Bazar and launched various intense agitations even to the extent of confronting the tear gas canisters of the police, a large number of street vendors arrived and set up their respective trading base at Lamphel Super Market today.

Taking advantage of the State Cabinet decision of shifting the street vendors, people of the surrounding area of Lamphel too have come out to reserve their respective plots leading to a fight over shortage of plots.

Some of the women vendors who could not find proper place for selling their wares complained to the police over the arrangement of the plots.

In addition to filling up all the six market sheds located on the western side of Shanker Talkies, a large number of women folks were seen selling vegetables and other consumable items in the open space just in front of Shanker Talkies.

People of the surrounding area have observed that there may be hike on the rate of rent for the houses and shops of the area following the shifting of the market base of the street vendors.

On the other hand, with unlicensed street vendors in Khwairamband Bazar area started to shift their trading base at Lamphel Super Market complex, parking of vehicles along the road sides of Khwairamband area including along either sides of BT Road, Paona Bazar and in front of GM Hall have been restricted from today.

Instead, parking lot for two-wheelers and four-wheelers have been reallocated along the road side of Family Welfare Department and along the road side to the north of GM Hall.
