Imphal, April 30 2024:
Coordination Committee (CorCOm), the conglomerate of revolutionary groups operating in Manipur and WESEA region, has paid its highest respect and saluted the working-class people (labours) across the world on the occasion of May Day.
In its message to the people, CorCom said that May Day will be observed under the theme 'Social Justice and Decent Work for All' on May 1 this year and reminded people about observance of May Day till date across the world including in Manipur.
May Day indeed is the gift of the nationwide strike launched by the American Federation of Labour on May 1, 1886 .
In commemoration of the strike launched in Chicago in 1886, International Labour Day (May Day) was first observed in 1889 and continues till date as it signifies the united stand taken by labourers against colonialism and capitalists though burden of labours across the world still persists.
While reminding people about the significance of May Day, the CorCom message issued by its publicity committee lamented over the worsening economic condition of Manipur due to privatisation of public sector institutions and deprivation of job security of labourers.
More than 80 percent of labourers or working-class people in Manipur are working without any form of social security and denied job security.
Condition of female workers is even worse while daily wage for both male and female labourers at far off places remains extremely low with social welfare and labour departments yet to support them even at the time of medical emergency.
The administration overwhelmed by capitalists not only disregard farmers and labourers but also divert even minuscule welfare funds provided by the government.
While the condition of workers has worsened alarmingly, the state is filled with incidents of powerful and wealthy people snatching entitlements of farmers, fishermen and labourers.
This has put working-class people in dire situation, grappling with harsh realities in unorganised sector where exploitation is rampant.
However, poor farmers take biggest role and responsibility in the revolutionary movement and this has been proven with China's freedom movement, CorCom said.
As it is natural for some wealthy people to lay siege on the economy and administration in a capitalist system, the situation in Manipur has been exacerbated by the rising trend of 'absentee landlords' who control large portions of paddy land, resulting in farmers facing subjugation and loss of opportunities.
This indeed is the real issue farmers and labourers in Manipur are enduring at present, CorCom said, adding that workers have great role to play in abolishing the society ruled by capitalists.
While asserting that the alarming situation in Manipur has happened after India annexed the once sovereign nation, CorCom stressed the need for converging national liberation struggle with labour movement and urged people to unite towards empowerment of labourers.
